Preparing for the Red Sea Liveaboard with a Rebreather
Having not long made the jump to a rebreather from OC (open circuit or conventional scuba) i am off to the Redsea on MY Mistral via Scuba Travel on the 13th of June for a week of ultimate wreck aqua therapy. To say I am looking forward to it would be the understatement of the century, admittedly I haven’t heard all of the understatements in the world, However it is safe to say I can’t bloody wait!
At this time of writing I have one week and one day to go. I started to dump all my gear in a spare room of the house (AKA the man cave) about three weeks ago and I am trying to hoard every single piece of kit I may need to make my trip that little bit more enjoyable / comfortable, as and when I think of it. This works very well with what I call my “diving Tourette’s” “MASK”!!! or some other piece of kit, I shout every so often in fear I may have forgotten to pack it!
So what is this costing me so far, the Scuba Travel package is coming in at the best part of £1,200.00. Now for a weeks diving (5days 4 dives a day) all inclusive, excluding beer on the boat, but including everything else i.e flights, transfers, air and weights, this is a cracking price. but for us rebreather divers this is just the start. My weapon of choice is the AP Diving Inspiration XPD (formally known as Vision but recently changed due to branding). I purchased it new in September 2014 and I must say its the most fun I have had with my cloths on. Moving swiftly on… I took the decision that because my cells are a little over 10 months old (APD16’s) I brought three new ones at £200.00, as sods law dictates all three will go down on day one, so I aint taking no chances! I also thought I would buy a full set of O-rings o2 compatible grease and an extra mouth piece £80.00. having weighed up the options “literally” I thought I would buy sofnolime on board at 25 euros (cant find the euro icon on my key board) a fill!!!!!!!!!!!! im guessing at least 6 fills which (I had to use a calculator but you would have already calculated) is 150 euros. I could have purchased a sports bag and shipped my own out there, £74 for the lime and £25 for the extra carriage = £99.00 im going to save a mega £15 or so. Not to mention I had to buy a sports bag anyway if I wanted to take fins, semi dry, MASK!!! spare dive computer … and well everything else that isn’t rebreather related. Only other cost other than getting to and from the airport £40.00 is the essential couple of beers with the boys in the airport lounge. So total price if you haven’t already done it.. wait there…. as I type this into my calculator…. is £380.00 extra!! plus o2 lets call it £450.00 making the whole expedition £1,650.00
So am I put off????? I will let you know in a couple of weeks, MASK!!!, for sure but just thinking it through in my mind 24-28c, 25m viz plus, some of the worlds best wrecks, great company. Oh and not forgetting silent diving with almost endless bottom time…. Put off? its a Bargain surely!
